What
The producers of the Mid-Atlantic's first ever Green Wedding Showcase will host a Media Day to promote some of the highlights of the show which will feature the area's hippest, most forward-thinking sustainable wedding and event vendors.
Attendees will have the opportunity to see a butt-bowed wedding dress from the 80s that was repurposed into a stunning contemporary design by Barbara Deckert Couture of Elkridge, Maryland. This will be the first public reveal of the gown.
About the dress
Recycling and Materials
Recycled materials from the original dress include the poly shantung and poly underlining, beaded lace motifs, lace trim, pearl buttons, beads, pearls, sequins, and crinoline netting. From the original dress, only a handful of postage stamp-size shantung pieces, a few unembellished lace motifs, and a small piece of net remain. Several of the large beaded lace motifs from the original gown were "played forward" to embellish another bride's custom gown. The front and back of the original dress were used intact; the train became the overskirt on the new dress. New materials include fifteen yards of Amity Peace Silk, corselette materials, and biodegradable China silk in green and purple.
Total labor: 77.25 hours/Deconstruction of original dress: 20 hours
Original dress cost about $25; Peace silk and China silk cost about $550; wholesale cost of dress (labor plus materials) would be about $5,000.

Why
Frustrated by the amount of waste they have seen at wedding shows, and events in general, the producers decided to band together and create the change they wanted to see in the industry. They want to show couples that green is chic, affordable and absolutely the way to go for their Big Day. No other wedding show in this area has been designed specifically to promote green, sustainable options for brides and grooms. Furthermore, the show itself will be a green event by being virtually paperless (no show guides or name badges) and will feature zero waste stations with recycling and compost bins. The Carbon Fund is offsetting the carbon emissions for the event and there will be no bottled water – only filtered water and organic beverages served in corn-based cups. Event the event staff will wear t-shirts made of 100% organic cotton.
